What should I list it at?
Tell it what you paid and what you want to make. It works backwards through the fees and gives you the price to list at, and the price you must not go below.

The mistake this avoids
Adding your fee percentage to the price you wanted leaves you short every time, because the fee is charged on the higher price. This works it out the other way round, so the number you see is the number you actually keep.

- Why not just add the fee percentage to my price?
- Because the fee is charged on the price you end up listing at, not the one you started from. Adding 12.8% to a fifty pound target gives 56.40, but the fee on 56.40 leaves you under fifty. The right answer is 57.34 - this solves it rather than adding it on.
- What is break-even?
- The price where you keep nothing and lose nothing: everything the item cost you, plus the fees charged on that price. List below it and the sale costs you money.
- Is margin the same as markup?
- No, and mixing them up is expensive. Margin is profit as a share of the selling price; markup is profit as a share of what you paid. A 50% margin is a 100% markup. This calculator uses margin, the way platforms and accountants mean it.
