UK reselling tax estimator

Roughly what you would owe on a year of reselling, with the trading allowance and your day job taken into account. An estimate to plan with, not tax advice.

Your reselling year

An estimate, not tax advice. It uses 2025/26 rates for England, Wales and Northern Ireland - Scottish income tax bands are different, and your own situation may be too. Check HMRC or an accountant before you act on it.

The part that catches people out

Reselling profit sits on top of your salary, so it is taxed at the rate your total income reaches - not from zero. Reseller OS keeps the year's figures straight as you go, so this is a number you read rather than reconstruct in January.

Questions

Do I have to pay tax on reselling in the UK?
If what you sold for in a tax year is 1,000 pounds or less, the trading allowance usually means there is nothing to declare. Above that you register as self-employed and pay tax on the profit. The allowance is measured on the money that came in, not on profit.
Does my job's salary change what I owe on reselling?
Yes, and this is the part people get wrong. Reselling profit is taxed on top of your salary, at whatever rate your total income reaches. If your salary already uses your personal allowance, your first pound of reselling profit is taxed.
Trading allowance or real expenses?
Whichever is bigger - you may deduct the 1,000 pound allowance or your actual costs, never both. This estimator works out both and uses the better one, and tells you which it used.
Are these figures current?
They are the 2025/26 rates for England, Wales and Northern Ireland: a 12,570 personal allowance, 20% to 50,270, 40% to 125,140, and Class 4 National Insurance at 6% then 2%. Scottish income tax bands differ. Rates change every year, so check HMRC before you file.
